The New York Yankees are doing it. For as much as fans complain about their penchant for not making the obvious move, they've done now done that multiple times early this year, with the most impactful ones coming over the last 36 hours.
The latest of which is top prospect George Lombard Jr. getting promoted to Triple-A on Tuesday night. The news broke during the Bombers' game against the Texas Rangers, and fans couldn't be more excited.
Lombard Jr. is very much still a work in progress, but he showed flashes this spring training, which included a homer off Garrett Crochet. After he cooled off a bit and was reassigned to minor league camp, he did nothing but torch baseballs. Not to mention, he continued to flash elite leather at multiple positions.
Now he's just one step away from The Show. Fans weren't sure what to expect in regard to how the Yankees were going to handle Lombard. Many believed we could be waiting months to see the promotion regardless of how good he was performing. But the front office thankfully got aggressive.
Just like how they did with Jasson Dominguez when Giancarlo Stanton hit the IL, and just like how they did with Elmer Rodriguez when they demoted Luis Gil to Triple-A.

George Lombard Jr. promotion to Triple-A now puts heat on Yankees' Anthony Volpe
And ... uh ... maybe Yankees insider Joel Sherman was onto something? Lombard Jr. getting the bump to Triple-A doesn't make it a foregone conclusion he will debut with the Yankees in 2026, but it at least puts him on a path to do so. If his offense holds up, he'll be in the Bronx sooner than most think.
With Anthony Volpe expected to return to the Yanks this week, that creates a narrative fans never thought the organization would entertain. If Volpe can't find his footing with the bat or glove over an extended period while Lombard Jr. excels, that's going to foster a loud discussion among the fanbase. It will undoubtedly create headlines. That's why it was believed Lombard Jr. would spend at least another month in Double-A while Volpe got acclimated to game action following shoulder surgery.
The expectation is that Lombard, Jr will some SS and some 3B at AAA.

There is a world where they co-exist, though. With Lombard Jr. set to play some third base on top of his shortstop duties, that could make him a valuable infield utility option off the bench (Lombard can also play second base). In a perfect world, Volpe is serviceable and Jose Caballero assumes a superutility role. Any Lombard Jr. promotion in that scenario would alleviate the pressure and allow him to fill the gaps dictated by Aaron Boone. Is it a night at second or third base against a lefty so Boone can sit Ryan McMahon/Jazz Chisholm? Or a night at shortstop when Volpe needs a breather? There are plenty of options.
Whatever the case, the Yankees' minor league plan has been coming together over the past couple years like we've never seen before. And nobody ever believed we would see a Volpe/Lombard situation like this. We're hoping for a copacetic development, but our first instinct is to predict the potential chaos given where things have been trending over the last year.
