Yankees fans don't believe insider's Anthony Volpe take after Giancarlo Stanton hits IL

Not sure about this.

The New York Yankees waited as long as they possibly could, but the inevitable occurred after Giancarlo Stanton left Friday night's game in Houston with a lower leg injury. It turns out it won't be as short-term of a situation as the team's expected.

Manager Aaron Boone announced Monday night after the win over the Rangers that Stanton was headed to the 10-day injured list, making Jasson Dominguez's promotion much more impactful.

It also clears a path for Anthony Volpe, who is expected to return this week, even though it hardly makes any sense. He underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in October and there's no reason he should be rushed back after just a handful of games at Double-A and Triple-A. But we aren't making the decisions.

The Yankees can afford to get by the next few days with an open roster spot while they finish their series against the Rangers. Dominguez needs run. Paul Goldschmidt could use some more. Randal Grichuk has been swinging a fairly warm bat. The bullpen's largely been rested due to the stellar work of the starting rotation.

But whether you wanted Volpe back or not, it's certainly happening for the upcoming homestand, as Double-A Somerset continues to spam the world with games featuring the former top prospect.

Expect Yankees to activate Anthony Volpe for Friday's series opener vs Orioles

It is what it is. Volpe is part of this team's plans and there's nothing that can be done. How long will his leash be? We are going to guess pretty long if he's being thrusted right back into action as Boone stumbles around questions about how Volpe's return will affect Jose Caballero's playing time.

Volpe, per what the team has said throughout the offseason, is expected to take over the starting shortstop role when he's back, relegating Caballero to a super utility role. It could end up working, we won't deny that. But that means Volpe will have to pull his weight consistently, which is something fans have never seen.

What we don't buy is the organization actually holding Volpe accountable because, again, it's never happened. But Yankees insider Joel Sherman seems to think Volpe will be treated similarly to Dominguez and Luis Gil — something fans couldn't disagree more with.

We are talking about the guy who got the Yankees' upended their entire process with prospects. Never before have we seen the organization clear a path for a player like they did for Volpe. Never before did they allow spring training stats to count, until it came down to Volpe and Oswald Peraza. Never before did we see them allow vastly below-average play from a cost-controlled asset to persist for three years. They let him play through a serious injury for FIVE months last year, seemingly allowing him to dictate the entire situation, for reasons unknown.

If Volpe gets the Gil/Dominguez treatment, Yankees fans will be floored. They will be stunned. Because why now? He's never been demoted. Hell, he's never been benched! He's the only underperformer they are willing to stake their reputation on.

We'd love Sherman to be correct. We really do. But Volpe, coming off an injury and debuting new swing mechanics, will get as much run as he needs to get comfortable, because that's all he's ever gotten.
