For as much as Yankees fans cannot stand Aaron Boone at times, the veteran manager has never been in such a situation as multiple Mets skippers have been during his tenure. The latest? Former Yankees bench coach and Boone's righthand man in Carlos Mendoza.
Back in 2023, the Mets poached Mendoza from the Yankees in a move Bombers fans were upset with. Boone had just come off a playoff-less campaign and many believed it was time for a change, especially after the 2021 and 2022 disasters. Not to mention, Mendoza had filled in for Boone on multiple occasions following ejections and handled the job well. He was specifically great with the media.
But now? After a magical 2024 NLCS run, the Mets endured an historic choke job in 2025 to miss the playoffs. To begin 2026, they have been terrible and are in the midst of an 11-game losing streak. In fact, since June 13 of last year, the Mets are on a 98-loss pace.
We'll be the first to admit that the Yankees haven't been a shining, perennial contender under Boone, but he's about to outlast four Mets managers over his tenure in New York. Boone joined the Yanks the same season Mickey Callaway was named manager in Queens. Think about that. Luis Rojas and Buck Showalter followed.
And now Mendoza's seat is about as hot as it gets in mid-April. This obviously isn't all his fault. The players aren't delivering. There are some costly injuries (Juan Soto). He's dealing with an entirely new roster after David Stearns' offseason gut job. But it's not like he's helping himself after the Mets' walk-off loss to the Cubs on Sunday.
Carlos Mendoza says the Mets did not consider intentionally walking Nico Hoerner in the 10th inning:

"In that situation, especially with Hoerner, you put him at first base, they're going to take second base there. You know there's a contact situation there but then they got some… pic.twitter.com/fCX1KjJJMp
Aaron Boone is about to outlast 4 Mets managers if Carlos Mendoza gets fired
Just imagine if Boone said this. Yankees fans would be losing thier minds and "Unbiased Mets fan" would be quote-tweeting it into oblivion. This would be the best moment of the Mets' season, even if they were on an 11-game winning streak. That's how their fandom works. Their eyes are never on their own paper.
And again, for as underwhelming as Boone has been, he's largely steered a reliable ship. The Yankees' "disastrous" 2023 season in which they went 82-80, missed the playoffs, and didn't have Aaron Judge for 60 games feels like a "pretty good" scenario for the Mets, who have experienced collapse after collapse and scandal after scandal.
We're not telling Yankees fans to thank the high heavens every night before bed that Boone is your manager ... we're just saying that Boone, over the course of eight-plus years, has never been savaged this badly by an opposing team's television network.
"I think Carlos Mendoza may want to update that LinkedIn page... Former major-league manager, not great at managing late-game situations. That's what the update may look like."

Diehard Yankees fans know Mendoza's worth as a coach. They'd welcome him back in a second. The overarching theme here is that anybody taking any position with the Mets is destined to experience a spiral unlike any other.
Whether it's the Yankees' way of doing things or Boone's' underrated ability to keep his clubhouse in line, this serves as a reminder that it could always be worse. We know the Mets are good for helping us adjust our perspective at least three times a year.
