Anthony Volpe's return to the New York Yankees is drawing closer. He's set to begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Tuesday after his medical checkup didn't set off any alarms.
While Volpe's been out, Yankees fans have had a break from criticizing his on-field performance, but then again, he's still managed to provide some content for ridicule with his penchant for flavorless or even downright confusing answers to interview questions.
Volpe's most recent quote about getting back on the field won't exactly have Yankees fans running through a brick wall. "So it's going to be great," he said of his return to action. Fans, are you totally amped, or what?

In Volpe's defense, he may have been instructed by PR people to just play it safe and keep things simple in interviews after he gave one in March that didn't go well. In that interview, Volpe basically just repeated every question back to his interviewer and revealed absolutely nothing about his health status, timeline for return, or whether or not he's a socially functioning human being.
Volpe's latest foray into Yankees fans' consciousness was his appearance in the Yankees dugout during the team's recent, terrible series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Why exactly was Volpe there? We're not sure. If it was for vibes, they didn't supply much. Volpe could be seen on the broadcast smiling from ear to ear and showing off his Florida tan like a man who sleeps soundly at night knowing full well how underwhelming Jose Caballero has looked so far in 2026.
But who are we kidding? Even if Caballero was playing like a rich man's Honus Wagner right now, the starting shortstop position would still be handed back to Volpe on a silver platter. That's always been Brian Cashman's plan, and Aaron Boone might even be a bigger fan of the plan than Cashman himself.
Yankees fans have no choice but to embrace Anthony Volpe right now
Fans would love to be wrong about Volpe and watch him explode for a career year. The Yankees and their struggling offense could definitely use it. And it'll be nice to have a shortstop who doesn't feel the need for overstated celebrations at the wrong moment or highly obnoxious eye black aesthetics that aren't in any way supported by performance.
Volpe isn't the best-case scenario at short (far from it), but right now, he's the lesser of two evils for the Yanks. George Lombard Jr. might be knocking on the door sooner than we expected, but for now, we might as well pretend that Volpe's quotes are legendary.
