When we last caught up with the injured trio of Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, and Anthony Volpe, things were starting to progress, but the real challenges lie ahead. Now, we have a fresh round of updates that have the three moving closer towards their respective returns to the New York Yankees.

The big news concerns Cole, who has consistently exceeded expectations as he races back. He threw 42 pitches, the equivalent of three simulated innings, against High-A Hudson Valley hitters on April 12. All went well, and according to Aaron Boone, the Yankees will decide on whether or not he'll begin a rehab outing in the coming days.

We're not out of the woods yet, but it would appear that the 2023 AL Cy Young winner is set up to return at the most optimistic end of his timetable.

Carlos Rodón's path back to the Yankees wasn't derailed by his hamstring scare

Rodón seemed to be making nice progress despite not appearing in Grapefruit League action towards the end of March, but then a potential setback threatened everything. Rodón suffered hamstring "tightness" while throwing a bullpen session as the calendar flipped to April.

It could have been a new injury, or at least a serious speed bump. Fortunately, it seems that it was more of a scare than anything. The veteran southpaw threw 50 pitches at Yankee Stadium on April 13, and his next move might be a rehab start. It doesn't appear as if he's lost much (if any) time in his quest to get back into action.

Anthony Volpe traveled north with the Yankees and is set for a rehab assignment at Somerset

Volpe came back with the Yankees from Tampa after the weekend series against the Rays, and he's being evaluated today by team Dr. Christopher Ahmad. As long as the checkup goes well, he'll be in Somerset for a rehab assignment.

The 25-year-old has already racked up at least 50 live at-bats during his work down in Tampa, but the plan is to bring him along with caution, starting with him playing three to five innings over his first handful of rehab games followed by four games this week.

Volpe is more excited than ever to rejoin his teammates, which has been about the only thing that he's made consistently clear while discussing his rehab progress. If all goes well, he'll be back in the Bronx very soon, and Jose Caballero can go back to a utility role as fan frustration has grown with his performance at shortstop.
