Aaron Judge's delicate injury situation has had Yankees fans in a bad place ever since they learned of the situation in late May. Judge has not played since then, and some of us pessimists had little hope he'd return at all in 2026 after the Yankees' initial injury update read "Judge is expected to return at some point this season."

Wrapping a team announcement like that hardly inspires confidence, but most of us have remained hopeful. And despite a whole lot of uncertainty over the last two and a half months, we've finally received some clarity on Tuesday.

Aaron Boone told reporters that Judge is "advancing to his hitting progression" this week. That's his most notable step thus far and it follows the recent updates of the slugger playing catch, running, and conducting drills in the pool.

This, Yankees fans, feels like the final frontier. If Judge can get past the initial stages of his re-introduction to hitting, there is real hope for his return in 2026. Not only that, but there would seem to be a real chance of him getting back into a groove before the end of the regular season.

But if he endures any sort of setback? We're in for a world of hurt. That'll be curtains. So fans will rightfully be living and dying with every following update.

Yankees' 2026 season hinges on Aaron Judge's ability to return from injury

Max Fried's return to the IL on Monday was a gut punch right after learning Carlos Rodón would be activated. When will we get to see the $725 million rotation in action together? Ever? Can't we get one legitimate turn through?

But the Yankees' starters are the best in the league, even when they're not at full strength. Judge is the only antidote for the current woes. The Yankees' offense is putrid and it's clear Judge represents the missing piece for everybody involved.

New York ranks towards the bottom of the league in all major offensive categories since the beginning of June. They've switched personnel in and out. Nothing's changed. Judge's presence is what elevates lesser hitters, and his overall production is what fuels the Yankees' engine.

If the Yankees are thinking about advancing past the Wild Card round, Judge will need to be in the mix. There is absolutely no doubt about that. They will not be able to match up against a team like the Red Sox and get away with scoring 4-6 total runs, no matter how their rotation performs.

And this is the last frontier. Judge needs to get past this part unscathed. It might feel ridiculous to sound this cautious, but the complicated nature of his injury doesn't have him out of the woods. Not even close.

Fingers crossed. If the Yankees can tread water and Judge can return within three weeks, we're talking about a real chance at making a run.
