The last time the New York Yankees took on the Philadelphia Phillies, it was one of the many low points of the Bombers’ season.
They dropped two in Philly, both in different kinds of crushing fashion. The first came on a walk-off after New York had battled back from a five-run deficit to tie it up. The next was an effortless 7-0 Phillies victory that featured an awful start from Domingo German and … four total Yankees hits.
On Tuesday, the teams, in a very similar situation, will meet for another two-game inter-league set at Yankee Stadium. New York is 48-44 after a series win over the Red Sox and they’re looking to make up as much ground as possible before the trade deadline. Philadelphia is 47-45 and just 2.5 games out of the NL East lead.
But the Yanks are 7.5 games back of the Red Sox in the AL East, so this series will be a bit more urgent for Aaron Boone’s side, which is a skeleton crew as it deals with various injuries and COVID-19 absences.
Not the greatest situation for the Bombers, who will also be trotting out their worst starter on Tuesday followed by a “TBD” on Wednesday. Great.
After this Phillies series there will be four games against the Red Sox and three against the Rays, all on the road. Time to buckle up and take care of business here, but it won’t be easy. Let’s dive in.
What Channel is the Yankees Game on Today?
Tuesday night’s game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be viewed on the YES Network and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Yankees vs Phillies Odds Today
Ah yes, our favorite part. Trying to make sense of the bookmakers’ odds.
On Tuesday, the Yankees are the underdogs, sitting at +110 on the moneyline (bet $100 to win $110), while the Phillies are -130 (bet $130 to win $100). If you want to spice things up and take the run line, the Yankees +1.5 runs is -140 (bet $140 to win $100) and the Phillies -1.5 runs is +120 (bet $100 to win $120).
Lastly, the over/under is 9.5 runs, with the under at -130 (bet $130 to win $100) and the over at +110 (bet $100 to win $110).
If you want our opinion, given the minimal disparity between the moneyline and the run line, it seems the books are leaning toward the Phillies.
Yankees vs Phillies Pitching Matchup
And here’s why! It’ll be Domingo German (4-5, 4.72 ERA) vs Aaron Nola (6-5, 4.53 ERA). Though their stats look similar, their pitching styles couldn’t be more different. Nola’s ERA is inflated because he gave up 17 runs in his final four starts before the All-Star break. He hasn’t pitched since July 6, either.
However, he shut down the Yankees back on June 13, going 7.2 innings and only allowing three hits and one walk while striking out nine in the 7-0 win … which German pitched! The Yankees’ right hander allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings. Another big note: German hasn’t tossed a quality outing since May 20 and hasn’t started a game since June 30 (he’s been coming out of the bullpen since then after undergoing surgery for a root canal).
Yankees Starting Lineup
This lineup is…weird! Feast your eyes on all that lefty speed, though, with Estevan Florial appearing right away following his promotion.
Yankees vs Phillies Prediction Today
But hey! The Yankees are winning games when they’re really not expected to while they lose ones that seem to be layups. This one’s a bettor’s nightmare, especially given that logic, because the research and stats likely won’t align with the outcome.
Given Nola’s weak recent run of form, coupled with the fact he hasn’t pitched in two weeks, look for the Yankees’ battered lineup to find some life if he’s unable to hone his stuff early. German? He’s a risk every time he takes the mound, but if he can deliver four quality innings, this one will fall in the Yankees’ favor.
Plus, if the Yankees hit Nola early, the Phillies will be forced to go to their awful bullpen. They’ll need their right-hander to be tip-top in order to come out with a win. Let’s call it a Yankees 6-4 victory, shall we?
