Is Didi Gregorius teasing a return to the New York Yankees?!

With the DJ LeMahieu negotiations remaining at a standstill, New York Yankees fans are rightfully concerned about the state of the middle infield. If he doesn’t return, it certainly feels like Gleyber Torres could be shifted back to second base as the front office explores some shortstop options given how slow the market has been to develop.

And, of course, as we’re thinking about that, current free agent and former Yankee Didi Gregorius went ahead and posted a “Throwback Thursday” picture on Instagram in which he’s wearing his Bronx Bomber gear.

But we guess Didi is now a photoshop expert because he wiped out the Yankee logos on his hat and shirt. Just good old No. 18 with the MLB, New Era and Majestic logos. Does Gregorius realize what he’s doing?! The fanbase is fragile right now!

And he copped a like from CC Sabathia! Come on now, don’t do this to us. There wasn’t a single fan happy to see Didi go, even if it meant installing an elite middle infield with LeMahieu and Torres. In some ways, Didi was an influential member of the heart and soul of the team. He was the first full-time shortstop after Derek Jeter and he managed to deliver epic moments while embodying what it meant to be in New York.

Now? We’re just sitting here reminiscing about Instagram posts and trying to concoct an infield solution that could feature him, LeMahieu, Torres, Luke Voit and Gio Urshela. Can we bring back the rover position?

And that conversation with Domingo German?! Someone really needs to tell us what’s going on.

We hate to even mention this … but if there was any succession plan in place in the event LeMahieu and the Yankees can’t come to a deal, the return of Gregorius would do wonders in (partially) quelling the anger among the fans. We’re not saying this transition would be seamless, but it’d certainly have many looking at the bright side rather than yelling at the nearest wall.

Yup, we’ve now reached the point of the offseason where we’re trying to figure out the best move possible to avoid riots in the Bronx if LeMahieu departs in free agency. Thanks, Didi!
