Who ends up with DJ LeMahieu, the Yankees or the Nationals? Well, let’s let Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto decide!
Whether DJ LeMahieu returns to the Yankees or not, it’s clear it’s only going to be after a true dogfight for his services has been completed.
While we’ve heard the Yankees are still the favorite — though perhaps not at five years — there are plenty of teams involved in the pursuit, to varying degrees of severity.
The New York Mets? Maybe, after the Robinson Cano suspension, but they’ve got Jeff McNeil to shift and several other expensive targets to prioritize. The Blue Jays? Not sure, but we’re worried about it! Would be annoying!
Of all the landing spots we’ve sifted through so far, the Washington Nationals’ reported interest seems to make the most sense. After all, we’ve heard plenty of stories about people who are “willing to take discounts” for the Yankees before, only to see some other team blow them away — like Patrick Corbin and the, uh, Nationals a few years back.
Perhaps we should just let Juan Soto and Gleyber Torres fight for LeMahieu in MLB’s Instagram comments, then declare one of them the official winner of the sweepstakes?
We’re loving every minute of this, especially if, “You don’t need (it)” is a plea that the Yankees are so overloaded, they should just let LeMahieu walk. Nice try, Mr. Soto! The Yanks very much do need this man — and plus, your team is the more recent champion! People are trying to chase you! You don’t get to tell them to hold off.
The Nationals’ pursuit is intriguing mostly because they prioritized LeMahieu in 2018-19, too, and aren’t afraid to flex their financial muscle.
But Torres’ ability to snoozily sleep on Soto infringing on his territory breeds confidence — does he know something we don’t?
With Thanksgiving approaching, we hope this whole drama gets done and dusted soon.
We also hope the Yankees trade for Nationals ace Max Scherzer in the final year of his contract and really make Soto eat his words.
We hope for a lot of things.
