Yankees starter Deivi Garcia found the perfect accent to his hairstyle for a chaotic offseason.
Yankees rookie Deivi Garcia is not going to let a turbulent offseason get him down. No, sir.
Being used for just one inning across two postseason series clearly has not harshed Garcia’s vibe as much as it bummed the rest of us out, and going into 2021, the kid looks to be the best version of himself.
After a month-and-a-half of attacking the zone as a diminutive starter who seemed to embody a “do your job” mentality with nothing but a workmanlike fastball, Garcia earned several Pedro Martinez comparisons, and even got to speak to his idol a few times on MLB Network.
But, based on new photos of Offseason Deivi which have just emerged, he may already be transitioning into the “Jheri Curl/Lifting a Little Person in the Locker Room” phase of Martinez’s career. Check out this blue hair!
If George Steinbrenner were still alive…we never would’ve been blessed with this greatness, even during November.
If someone was going to wind up with blue hair this offseason, you would’ve said Jonathan Loaisiga, right? Maybe Tommy Kahnle after a weekend on the Jersey Shore? Domingo German?
The mild-mannered Garcia would’ve ranked somewhere towards the bottom of the list. Not quite in Gerrit Cole/Zack Britton territory, but fairly close to it.
For a pitcher known for his consistency in 2020 and an impressive lack of volatility, this move qualifies as major.
The next time you see Garcia on a big league mound — which, God willing, will be with the Yankees — he will not be sporting this hairstyle. The afro will be more normally coiffed, mostly hidden under a fitted cap.
But just know that, when left to his own devices, Garcia is maybe a bit more experimental than we gave him credit for.
Hopefully, he maintains the blue deep into offseason workouts so we get to see the team’s colors bob with every breaker he delivers. Can he get pinstripes next time?
Yankees: Blue Jays might’ve screwed NYY out of Charlie Morton
The Toronto Blue Jays have made one bizarre financial splurge this offseason, and it could take the Yankees out of the Charlie Morton bidding.
