Yankees fans will be excited by Gerrit Cole’s Instagram story with the Tanaka family.

The Yankees are going to have to split the difference between saving money and remaking the roster during the 2020-21 offseason. No pressure!

Team stalwarts like DJ LeMahieu and Masahiro Tanaka will be hitting the open market, without clear replacements in the pipeline behind them. After all, the Yankees’ depth was already tested in 2020, and that was with these fan favorites in place.

But amid all the budget-tightening rumors, we at least have one reason to be optimistic: Gerrit Cole’s Instagram story.

Though we’re not sure if Tanaka will be returning to the rotation, Cole’s warm family moment kinda makes you lean that he will, as the righty ace documented a double sushi date between the two clans.

Yup, that’s Gerrit and Amy Cole, along with Tanaka and his pop star wife Mai Satoda, enjoying some sushi in a limited indoor dining environment. Or is this a house? Somebody’s danged house? Pretty sweet.

Does this give us a genuine hint about whether Tanaka will return on a shoestring budget? Eh, not really. But it does make it clear how intrinsic he is to the Yankee family; this bond with the Coles came after just a half-year, after all.

The budget is one thing, but a quick glance at the rotation’s current standing proves things are pretty bleak, and a Tanaka discount (?) might be a worthy proposal.

Yup. Luis Severino mid-year, a bunch of rookies and five-starters like Jordan Montgomery, and that’s…that’s it. No Paxton, no Happ, and no Tanaka, as of right now.

Whether it’s retaining Tanaka or making a play for a veteran starter or two, the Yankees clearly have to do something. So why not just reach out to Cole’s sushi buddy and figure out a way to make all the finances work? Probably the simplest and most joyful route.
