Yankees: Has Jorge Posada been lying about his age all this time?

During the Yankees-Red Sox broadcast, we finally learned Jorge Posada’s real age.

Look anywhere. Wikipedia. Baseball Reference. Google. New York Yankees legend Jorge Posada‘s birthday is August 17 (today) and he’s 49 years old. But those sources are wrong. Everyone is wrong! And we have proof!

The first piece of evidence came in the form of an Instagram post from his wife, which was lovely, and revealed that Posada is “18 with 32 years of experience.” That’s a fat 50 for the folks counting at home.

It’s Jorge’s 50th today! HIP HIP! JORGE!!!

We should be celebrating even harder, but we didn’t realize until this evening that the man was turning a half-century old. How has the world accepted his age to be a year off for this long?

Not only do we have his wife revealing this information, but Posada did so himself during the Yankees-Red Sox broadcast on Monday night.

Former teammate Paul O’Neill gave Posada a call on Facetime so he and the broadcast team could wish him a happy birthday … but O’Neill also wanted to put him on the spot.

“The national public wants to know how old you are today!” O’Neill said enthusiastically.

“Yesterday I was 49, today I’m 50!” Posada responded. That’s all we gotta know. The mystery is solved. But I guess it wasn’t much of a mystery until about an hour ago? It’d be great to know the backstory here. We’re sure Posada isn’t perusing the web and being like “Baseball Reference has my age wrong, get them on the phone!”, but something’s gotta give.

We’re glad this is all sorted out now, though. Let’s celebrate Jorge for a moment, here.

Five-time World Series champion. Five-time All-Star. Five-time Silver Slugger. Eight seasons with 20 more more home runs (most all-time by an American League catcher). He’s one of the best hitting catchers of all time, finishing his career with a .273/.374/.474 slash line and 900 runs scored, 275 home runs and 1,065 RBI.

Happy

49th

50th to one of the best backstops ever!
