New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said fans could attend games in the Bronx this year.
What are we hearing? This is all too good to be true.
First, we got to see Gerrit Cole pitching to Aaron Judge at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Now there’s a chance Yankees fans can attend games in 2020?! Yes, exciting, but let’s pumped the brakes for a moment.
We have no idea what the protocol will be, this is merely forecasting. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told YES on Thursday that he expects to have the stadium filled at 20-30% capacity “at some point” IF fans are allowed.
COVID-19 has been unpredictable since Day 1 and now we’re seeing a spike in cases across the country, so nobody is really sure what the guidelines will be in a month or even five months from now. Both the NFL and NCAA are struggling with the same dilemma and those seasons don’t start for another two months.
And with New York being a hotbed for the virus as we saw back in March/April, nothing is guaranteed. All we can do is continue to follow safety guidelines and cross our fingers for the CDC to relax some of the gathering restrictions. So, in short, if you want baseball, wear a mask and stop going to bars and restaurants.
Another good wrinkle here is that Steinbrenner said the team has been in contact with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office as they continue to talk things out and make decisions together. Those discussions led to Spring Training 2.0 taking place in the Bronx due to the alarming spike of COVID-19 cases in Florida.
It’s assumed they got as far as talking about fans in the stands this year, especially since Steinbrenner mentioned people will have to social distance and wear masks if they’re allowed at games. He’s optimistic about the prospect too after revealing he saw encouraging cautious behavior from New Yorkers since getting back to the city.
Keep continuing with those safety protocols if you want to take the subway up to the Stadium in 2020, Yankees fans.
