After agreeing to contract terms with Gerrit Cole and Brett Gardner, the Yankees may be looking to improve at a few more positions this offseason, one of which could be first base.
Luke Voit is slated to be the Yankees starting first baseman for the 2020 season with Mike Ford as the backup. Both Voit and Ford have excellent power at the plate but combined for ten errors at first base last season, seven of which were committed by Voit.
After adding a three-time Gold Glove winner last offseason in D.J. LeMahieu, the Yankees could turn their attention to another Gold Glove winner who just spent the last three seasons playing for their biggest rival.
The former Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland could be the perfect candidate for the Yankees. He is a one-time Gold Glove winner and can be a cheap option for the Bombers. Better yet, he would add a left-handed at-bat to the lineup, as the Yanks are trying to replace the bat of Didi Gregorius, who joined the Phillies this offseason.
Moreland is coming off the 2019 season hitting .252 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs in 91 games after many of the games he missed were due to a quad strain. He only committed ten errors in his three seasons in Boston, the same amount combined between Voit and Ford last season.

The first base position will be loaded with the names of Voit, Ford and Moreland, if they were to sign the 34-year old veteran. There is no question that the Yankees can survive with Voit and Ford for the entire season, but they want to improve upon what they already have.
LeMahieu is the best first baseman on the team, and he is not even a first baseman. Moreland would not be brought in as a punishment to Voit or Ford, but to be a reliable backup and left-handed power source off the bench. As long as Ford has options, he would probably start the season in Triple-A to continue to develop his defensive skills. Voit could learn a lot from the longtime veteran, but still be the everyday starter.
The Yanks may look to other areas to improve upon, including the bullpen, backup catcher or even another utility infielder. If they decide to upgrade the first base position, Moreland could be their guy.
