Gleyber Torres has had to leave two of the Yankees last three games early after feeling discomfort in his abdomen/core area. After Tuesday night’s early exit many assumed he was headed for a trip to the lL but after additional tests reveal no injury Torres is day-to-day and will remain on the active roster.

The Yankees can breathe a sigh of relief for now but you can bet they’ll closely monitor their All-Star infielder in the coming days. Over the past week, they’ve already lost Edwin Encarnacion and Aaron Hicks to the IL so the last thing they’re going to do is rush Gleyber back onto the field to have him risk hurting his core even more.

We’ll have to wait and see if he can return to the lineup tonight in Toronto but I doubt he will. The smart play would be to rest Torres another day or two especially after the red-hot Gio Urshela returned Wednesday night after missing two straight games of his own due to injury.

Even though the tests came back clean some might argue that they should just place Gleyber on the IL and let him rest for the next 10 days because since his first at-bat on Sunday, when he reportedly started experiencing discomfort, he’s gone 0 for 9 at the plate, with 4 K’s.

The core issue has probably contributed to his very recent struggles because prior to Sunday he was on fire hitting three home runs and driving in six during the first three games of the four-game sweep over the Red Sox. That being said, if there’s nothing structurally wrong with his core there’s really no reason to put him on the IL. If this is just a day-to-day thing as expected he should be ready to play again at some point over the weekend.

The Yankees had IF Thairo Estrada make the trip to Baltimore just in case they had to place Torres on the IL but he’s now been sent back to Triple-A Scranton. Hopefully, Gleyber will only miss another game or two but until he returns the Yankees are covered at second base with DJ LeMahieu and Breyvic Valera as options to fill in.

That’s one of the main things that makes the Yankees so great, their incredible depth when it comes to position players. All season long it seems like every time someone in the lineup goes down with an injury his replacement steps right in and makes an immediate impact.

From Triple-A to the big league roster they’re so deep at every position that even if Torres ends up missing more time than expected you’d still expect the Yanks to continue to win games at the same rapid pace.
