With the trade deadline now just three days away talks between the Yankees and Blue Jays are heating up regarding Marcus Stroman. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the two sides have remained in regular contact of late but if New York is going to land Stroman it might cost them their top prospect Deivi Garcia.

This is going to be a tough decision for GM Brian Cashman and the Yankees. Right now it looks like the best available starter on the trading block is Stroman and the Yanks are clearly in desperate need of an upgrade to their starting rotation after the brutal road trip they just went through.

The Jay’s All-Star right-hander has been excellent of late and could really help New York down the stretch and in October but is he worth it if the cost to get him is Garcia? It’s tough to say.

This season the 20-year-old Garcia has emerged as the Yankees top overall prospect and recently earned a call up to Triple-A Scranton out of the All-Star break. He could be a late-season option for the Yanks come September and if he doesn’t make his big league debut this year he’ll certainly be in the mix to contribute in 2020.

We’ll have to wait and see if the Blue Jays lower their asking price, but if they don’t budge I don’t think the Yankees will either. One of the main reasons why they should be hesitant to deal Garcia is they’d only have Stroman under team control through the 2020 season. Garcia would obviously be under team control for much longer regardless of if he’s called up this season or not.

Now some might argue that the Yankees should make the deal and get the sure thing in Stroman instead of holding onto a prospect who hasn’t proved anything yet at the big league level. If Stroman was under contract through the 2022 season I would agree with that, but he’s not. So even though Garcia hasn’t thrown a pitch in the big leagues yet he’s to promising of a prospect to trade to a division rival for a pitcher who’s really good but isn’t a true ace by any means.

OF Clint Frazier, however, should be a guy the Yankees are willing to offer to the Jays or nay other team with a front lien starter in the trading block as a headliner. He’s more expendable than ever right now because unfortunately they don’t need him this year and they might not have a spot for him to play a lot next year either.

As for Miguel Andujar who Jon Heyman noted could also be dealt for a starter, I wouldn’t trade him for Stroman. He was so good for the Yanks during his rookie campaign offensively and his future is still extremely bright despite undergoing season-ending labrum surgery back in May.

Although his future moving forward with the club is also uncertain the only way they should trade him is if it’s for a legitimate ace that’s under contract past the 2020 season.

This is a tricky spot for the Yankees to be in because obviously their number one goal this season is to win a championship. Garcia and Andujar won’t help them do that this season, but they can certainly play a big role in helping them win multiple championships over the next five years.

Stroman can help them win this season and next year but if the Yankees don’t believe that he’s the guy that really puts them over the top than they shouldn’t give up players who can help them win for years to come.
