Before the offseason comes to an end the Yankees are going to trade Sonny Gray. It’s not a matter of if but when. Plenty of teams have interest in acquiring Gray but the Milwaukee Brewers may be the most prominent in talks according to reports.

The only reason the Yankees have yet to trade Gray is that they haven’t found the right deal. They’ve had multiple offers proposed their way, but as long as teams continue to show interest the Yankees will continue to hold on to him until they get what they want.

Earlier this month George King III of the New York Post reported that the Yankees have been asking opposing clubs for “high-end major league talent” in return for Gray. This Yankee team is in win-now mode so it makes sense for them to ask for big league players in return who can make an impact next season and help them contend for a championship. Although of all the teams rumored to be pursuing Gray we still haven’t heard any names thrown around who could go to the Yankees in a potential trade.

The Brewers don’t have much to offer New York in terms of available major league talent but they are very much in the mix to land Gray per Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

The Reds, as Morisi went on to mention seemed like a great landing spot for Gray earlier this offseason, but after acquiring Tanner Roark and Alex Wood this past month it’s not a pressing need for them to get another starting pitcher. Their All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett could have been an ideal return for the Yanks in a Gray trade because he could start at second and Gleyber Torres could than shift over to shortstop in the absence of Didi Gregorius.

As for Milwaukee, I don’t know who on their 40-man roster they’d be willing to move that could help the Yankees win in 2019. Relievers Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Burnes are two guys who really impressed out of the pen for the Brewers last October but they have the potential to become impact starters so I don’t see Milwaukee trading one of them for Gray.

Shortstop Orlando Arcia is someone who can fill in for Didi and play gold glove caliber defense, but he’s under team control through 202. He also showed a lot of promise offensively this past postseason and looks to be the team’s long-term shortstop.

Eric Thames could probably hit 25-home runs playing every day with the Yankees but he doesn’t hit for a high average and he can’t hit lefties. He also wouldn’t be a better starting first base option than either Luke Voit or Greg Bird.

If the Brewers want to land Gray they’re likely going to move a high-level prospect who is close to playing in the big leagues. Second baseman and Brewers top prospect Keston Hiura would likely be off limits but 2B/SS Mauricio Dubon could be had if the Yankees wanted him. He has a chance to make his big league debut next season and the Yankees farm system is very light on high-end middle infield prospects at the moment.

Next. Padres don't have much to offer Yanks to land Miguel Andujar in a trade. dark

The Brewers may be the team who is showing the most interest in trading for Gray right now but again if the Yankees don’t get the offer they’re looking for they’ll simply say no and move on to another team. Even though they’re going to trade Gray there’s no rush so until some team meets their demands it could be a while before were see him find a new home.
