Miguel Andujar had an incredible rookie season for the Yankees in 2018 and yet his name continues to be thrown around in trade rumors. The San Diego Padres are one team with heavy interest in acquiring him but don’t have much to offer in a potential deal.

First, let me say that I am one Yankees fan who is heavily against trading Miguel Andujar. Trading a homegrown star like him just doesn’t make any sense to me even if the Yanks do end up signing Manny Machado to a mega contract.

The main reason why the Yankees would trade Andujar is to acquire an ace such as Corey Kluber or Noah Syndergaard. However, after already trading for James Paxton and resigning J.A. Happ the Yankees starting staff is pretty much set for next season 1-5. CC Sabathia recently underwent heart surgery but he’s expected to be fully recovered by spring training and should be good to go by Opening Day.

Even if the Yanks still wanted to add another starter it’s hard to see them trading Andujar before the Machado situation is resolved. Signing him would be the only way a trade of Miggy would ever happen. With that being said let’s just say the Yankees did consider trading him to the Padres for the sake of arguing. What could they offer New York? The answer is not much at all.

Sure the Padres have one of if not the best farm systems in baseball but a lot of their top prospects are a year or two away from making an impact at the big league level. If the Yankees ever traded Andujar they would have to get big league ready players in return who could seriously impact their club next season. That just doesn’t really exist anywhere on the Padres big league roster.

More from Yanks Go Yard

Their starting rotation is not a strength with their best starter probably being 25-year-old left-hander Joey Lucchesi. Luchessi is a solid up and coming middle of the rotation starter but for Andujar, there’s no way he could be the centerpiece going back to New York. Unless the Padres threw in their top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. who’s also the second-best prospect in baseball and another front-tier prospect I don’t know why the Yanks would even open discussions with them.

The Yankees are in a win-now mode which means World Series or bust so acquiring an intriguing young pitching prospect like Mackenzie Gore or Chris Paddack wouldn’t benefit them next season. Keeping Andujar would regardless of how poor his defense may be because his offense is that good.

Next. Yankees could sign Freddy Galvis if they miss out on Machado. dark

He’s a budding star which is why the Padres are said to be so in love with him according to Jon Heyman of Fancred. Unfortunately for them, they have absolutely nothing they could offer the Yankees that would help the Bombers win a World Series next season more than Andujar can. I can’t blame them for trying, but there’s no way we’re going to see Miggy in a Padres uniform next season. Now let’s just hope he’s still in pinstripes and will continue to be for the long haul.
