The Yankees are reportedly one of the teams interested in landing free agent reliever Andrew Miller. If the price is right, then he’s someone they shouldn’t pass on.

Is there a good chance the Yankees reunite with Andrew Miller in 2019? Miller has been one of the most dominant relievers in the game over the past few years. However, injuries hurt him this year, and the 33-year-old lefty saw a decline in productivity in 2018. Miller struggled with knee and shoulder problems which kept him out for a good part of the season.

Over 34 innings pitched, he posted a 4.24 era his lowest since 2011. However when healthy, Miller is lights out. We saw that first hand during his time in pinstripes. With the Yankees, Miller spotted a 1.71 ERA over 106 Innings pitched. He also had a dominating 14.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

Between 2013-2017, Miller had an impressive 1.82 ERA in 291 innings while striking out 469 batters. He solidified himself as one of, if not, the best relievers in the game, at the time. Miller is a veteran that would only add to the Yanks’ stacked ‘pen. He’s also a valuable player to have in the clubhouse and can help mentor the younger relievers.

As long as Miller is healthy, then there is no question that the Yanks should make a move for him. Although Miller is seeking a multi-year deal, after his lackluster 2018 performance, he isn’t going to break the bank.

The top guys in the Yankee ‘pen are Aroldis Chapman, Chad Green, and Dellin Betances. Both Zach Britton and David Robertson are also free agents. The Yankees have interest in bringing back Robertson and Britton, but there are a handful of other teams in the mix.

More from Yanks Go Yard

Britton is still in his prime. At the age of 30, he is going to want a longer deal, and I’m not sure how much the Yanks are willing to give him. Robertson said he’d like to come back to the Yanks in 2019, but there are going to be other clubs who may offer a big contract to be their closer. D-Rob could take a better contract somewhere else if that’s the role he wants to fill so the Yanks are going to have to pick their poison.

With the possibility of Britton or Robertson parting ways, the Yanks are going to be looking for someone to fill the void. Miller is the perfect fit. With a substantial amount of depth in the ‘pen, manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t need to worry about overusing Miller.

In 2016, the Yankees traded Miller to the Indians for prospects J.P Feyereisen, Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield and Ben Heller. It was a great move, seeing as the Yankees were amidst a re-build, and looking to add to their farm system.

Frazier has shown some ability, but he’ll need to stay healthy in 2019. Sheffield has a lot of potential and is going to be looking to make an impact next season. Bringing Miller back is the icing on the cake. Again, as long as he’s healthy. Despite his struggles in ’18, Miller’s slider was still nasty.
