Yankees questioned by Pedro Martinez, much to Brett Gardner’s chagrin

Prior to the Yankees losing 9-3 to the Marlins on Wednesday night, Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez took to Twitter to question the Yanks’ recent ambition and philosophy.

A former member of the Red Sox questioning the Yankees mentality. Unsurprising to say the least. However impartial Pedro Martinez, the three-time Cy Young winner turned analyst for TBS and MLB Network should be; he recently took to the Internet (always a great idea) to air his concerns about the Bombers.

“The Yankees don’t seem to have the energy of a winning team. I understand some key players are injured, but they don’t seem to be hustling out there,’’ Martinez tweeted. “When you see a team that goes out there with energy, you see they carry momentum, they hustle, and they’re happy to be out there competing.”

While it’s easy to chastise everyone outside of Boston these days due to the Red Sox playing 89-39 ball, it’s not like the Yankees are at the bottom of the AL East standings.

At 79-47, Aaron Boone’s bunch have the second-best record in baseball, despite being nine games back of the Sox — and currently, hold the top spot in the AL Wild Card hunt by 3.5 games.

Now it’s not clear who Martinez is targeting in his tweet, if anyone directly — and he certainly isn’t offering any advice on how to fix the situation; however, the Yanks have gone 11-5 in their last 16 games.

Throw in the fact that the Bombers are without the services of Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius, Aroldis Chapman, Clint Frazier and C.C. Sabathia, who is set to return on Friday — and it’s quite remarkable what the boys in pinstripes have been able to achieve thus far in 2018.

Brett Gardner, the longest-tenured player in the Bronx, spoke to the New York Post about Martinez’s comments, which honestly didn’t seem to bother him.

“Obviously everyone is entitled to his opinion. He is probably a Red Sox fan more than a Yankee fan,” Gardner said of Martinez. “We have the second-best record in the game. They have the best and have a great team that is playing well. We have dealt with injuries, have the toughest schedule and the worst travel. We went to Boston and they beat us four straight. We played Sunday night, they were off [Monday] and we played in Chicago. Then we played a night game on getaway day and didn’t get home ’til 5 a.m.”

Even if Martinez is 100 percent correct in his assessment, which I refuse to admit for what he did to poor Don Zimmer, the Yankees played 20 games in 20 days before Monday’s off day. How are they not a little “weary”?

While it may be Pedro’s job to analyze things that are happening around the game of baseball, he’d be wise to do some research before tweeting (a valuable lesson for a lot of people). Then again, spending seven seasons of his 18-year career in Boston probably skewed his judgment just a bit.
