Yankees MASH unit continues with Didi Gregorius lost to DL
The hits just keep on coming, but not in a good way. This time, the Yankees were forced to place Didi Gregorius on the 10-day DL with a left heel contusion.
The Yankees were really holding out hope that they wouldn’t have to place their left-handed hitting shortstop, Didi Gregorius on the disabled list.
After colliding with Blue Jays’ first baseman Kendrys Morales on an RBI infield single during the first inning of Sunday afternoon’s affair, Gregorius tried as he might to brave it out, but was eventually lifted in the third inning for Ronald Torreyes.
With manager Aaron Boone calling it “a pretty significant bruise” at the time, the club will mark the move retroactive to August 20.
Set to begin a two-game set in Miami against Derek Jeter’s Marlins, the Yanks curiously recalled first baseman Luke Voit to take Didi’s spot on the 25-man roster.

Since coming over to New York from St. Louis as part of the Chasen Shreve trade, Voit is 3-for-16 with two RBIs and five strikeouts.
Why Tyler Wade, a natural shortstop wasn’t recalled to split duties with Ronald Torreyes signals to me the likelihood of Gleyber Torres shifting over to his original shortstop position; potentially allowing Neil Walker to get comfortable at second base — even though, he’s currently the Yanks’ starting right fielder.
Remember, Giancarlo Stanton is still feeling the effects of a left hamstring strain and the club can ill-afford to have him further aggravate the injury playing the field, hence his regular DH duties. However, Stanton did say he will man the familiar right field territory of Marlins Park on Tuesday — and if all goes to plan, will do the same on Wednesday.
Losing their No. 3 hitter in the lineup will further test the resolve of the Broken Bombers. On the season, Didi has played in 117 games — second only to Stanton’s 123. During that time, Gregorius has managed to slash .270/.333/.482 with a career-high 76 runs scored, 22 doubles, 22 home runs and 74 RBIs in 452 at-bats.
What makes things that much more frustrating is that over the past month, Didi has rediscovered the type of stroke that carried the Yankees through the first month of the season: .301/.365/.531 with 19 runs scored, six homers and 25 RBIs in 113 at-bats.
