The rookies and younger players on the Yankees have been a huge component of the team’s success thus far in the 2018 season.

The Yankees lineup this season is stacked with young players who have exceeded expectations and epitomized the moniker “Baby Bombers.”

The two, star rookies this year are 21-year-old Gleyber Torres and 23-year-old Miguel Andújar, both of whom have contributed immensely in their short time as members of the Yanks.

More from Yankees News

Gleyber Torres was the Yankees No.1 prospect and No. 6 in all of baseball. Since debuting on April 22, he’s hit .317 with 10 HR and 28 RBI. Additionally, he plays very strong defense at second. His strong arm adds depth to the infield.

He came up big with two walk-off hits in May: a three-run bomb against the Indians and a single against the Astros.

MLB named Torres the AL Player of the Month in May. He’s impressed both fans and the organization with his play so far, and his career has only just begun.

“You can feel (Torres) really just kind of slow it down and control the moment, and that’s something that’s stood out to me about him since he’s got here really,” Boone said.

Torres, however, isn’t the only impressive rookie this year. Miguel Andújar joined the Yankees very early in the season (April 1) and has proven his value as the team’s third baseman.

So far, Andujar’s collected 28 XBH in 52 games this season. His ability to hit for contact has been beneficial to the team. Overall, Andújar has played solid defense at third, filling the role of the injured Brandon Drury very nicely.

Another young player that has impacted the team is 24-year-old Luis Severino, who has been phenomenal this season. He’s 9-1 with a 2.27 ERA and 102 Ks. Since he first debuted in 2015, Sevy has become the team’s ace. He’s also among the best pitchers in the league.

Some of the team’s most powerful hitters made their major league debuts in the past several years. Slugger Aaron Judge’s first game with the Yanks occurred in August 2016, the same day in which Tyler Austin debuted. Both Greg Bird and Gary Sanchez debuted in 2015.

Veteran players like Brett Gardner and C.C. Sabathia are also integral pieces to the team. With so many young guys, clubhouse leaders help integrate and bond players.
