The Yankees need starting pitching help, where else to turn then Jacob deGrom of their cross-town rival New York Mets?

The Winter Meetings have just wrapped up and the Yankees did not make a move to acquire a starting pitcher, but why? General manager Brian Cashman is being patient and weighing all of his options before going all-in for someone.

One name who could be an interesting possibility that many have not spoken about is Jacob deGrom of the Mets. Sure it’s a long shot but it is something that could start to develop over the coming weeks.

Over the past four seasons, deGrom has gone 45-32 with a 2.98 ERA and a 9.7 K/9. He won the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year Award and made the All-Star team in 2015. deGrom is easily one of the top pitchers in baseball which is what would make it difficult for the Yankees to steal him from their “little brother.”

The Yankees have what the Mets are looking for, an abundance of young talent that could be acquired in such a deal. Outside of the “untouchable” Gleyber Torres and Estevan Florial, the Yanks would have no issue dealing any sort of combination of Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield, Chance Adams or Miguel Andujar to the Mets for deGrom.

These young stars could be enough to change the Mets’ minds about keeping deGrom because at the moment they do not have too good of a farm system and the future looks questionable, with the present not looking any better.

The right-hander is still only 29-years-old and will not be a free agent until 2021, giving the Yankees the potential to win with him now.

deGrom does have some injury history but he came back strong in 2017 going 15-10 with a 3.53 ERA while being the only bright spot in a season for the Mets, which was a major disappointment.

Not to mention that deGrom has postseason experience, which is something the Yankees should be looking at heavily among their options. If a pitcher can’t come through in a big game, then they have no business being on the 2018 Yankees, a team that is chasing a World Series title.

In four career postseason appearances, deGrom is 2-1 with a 2.88 ERA, which are pretty good stats for such a small sample size. It is also encouraging that he does not fold when the lights are brightest.

Another thing the Yanks would not have to worry about with deGrom is him being able to handle the media spotlight considering he has spent his entire career playing to-date in Queens, and has yet to run into any “issues.”

Trying to steal deGrom away from the Mets certainly sounds like an extremely tough task, but with Brian Cashman as the general manager, you never know what to expect.
