David Ortiz says Yankees can make a deep playoff run

Former Red Sox slugger and Hall of Famer-to-be David Ortiz believes his old rival, the Yankees, can advance well into the postseason despite being “underdogs” to both the Indians and Astros.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Yankees still have an outside chance of winning the American League East.

Currently sitting three games behind the Red Sox for the right to avoid the highly debated one-game Wild Card play-in, the Yankees would likely need to sweep the next two games against the Rays, and following three against the Blue Jays — on top of getting a whole lot of help from those same Jays and Astros, in sweeping the Red Sox.

Should the Yanks and Sox finish even, there would be a tiebreaker in New York on Monday. Undoubtedly exciting, this would definitely throw off both teams’ pitching rotations entering the playoffs — especially for the losing club forced to play in the Wild Card game.

While anything is possible — and I’d love to see the Yankees automatically advance to the Division Series, I’m mentally preparing myself for Oct. 3 at the Stadium, with Luis Severino taking the mound against the Twins.

However, had it not been for Aaron Hicks’ defensive heroics on Tuesday night, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

In the top of the first inning, Rays catcher Wilson Ramos sent a fly ball deep to right center field only to have Hicks — on a dead sprint — get to the 385-foot sign, leap with all his might and pull back a potential grand slam in unreal fashion.

The catch of the year would be a rallying cry for the Yanks, as rookie starter Jordan Montgomery settled down to lead his club to a 6-1 victory  — officially eliminating the Rays from postseason contention.

Prior to the win, David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz, who will cover the playoffs for FOX, alongside former Bomber Alex Rodriguez, told the New York Daily News he’d love to see a Yankees vs. Red Sox series.

"“The Yankees look good. Hey, when you’re in (the playoffs), anything can happen. It’s like starting from zero. Cleveland has been playing crazy good, Houston has been playing crazy good,” said Ortiz Monday. “But I always believe in the underdog. The underdog is always my favorite. You never know what can happen.”"

Ortiz would go on to affectionately call presumptive AL Rookie of the Year Winner, Aaron Judge “a beast,” in regards to all that the young slugger has accomplished this season.
