The Yankees are poised to collect their third straight series win today before they head to Citi Field to play the Rays. Today will also most likely be the occasion for their rookie sensation to break another major league record.

The Yankees continue to go about their business without, say, the flair of the Cleveland Indians and their mind-boggling sixteen game win streak, or the Dodgers sudden flailing except for when Clayton Kershaw continues to make it look easy.

Instead, the Yankees can make it three series wins in a row today when they face the Rangers in a 3:05 PM (ET) start at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.

The team is not playing perfect baseball, but they continue to play well, and that’s all they need at this point in the season to prime themselves for the playoffs.

They’ll send Jordan Montgomery to the hill to complete the job in Texas before they return home for an unexpected but welcome ten game “homestand” that includes three games with the displaced Rays, four games against the pesky Orioles and three with their now arch-rival Minnesota Twins.

Montgomery is the choice of Joe Girardi over, hopefully, a very patient Jaime Garcia, who is apparently being moved aside in the rotation. Garcia is, however, expected to get the start on Wednesday in the final game of the Tampa Bay series.

Montgomery has been looking like he is feeling the wear and tear of his first big league season. Between that and the fact, the Yankees are mindful of his total innings this year, now standing at 135 plus time spent at Triple-A, the bullpen can be expected to get a workout in today’s game.

Holy guacamole, another Judge record

There’s another facet of today’s game, though, which reveals the not so hidden value to the team of Aaron Judge. ESPN Stats and Information reports that another personal record is in sight for the 25-year old:

"Aaron Judge tied the rookie record for walks in a season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, by drawing his 106th of the season today. Les Fleming also walked 106 times as a rookie for the Cleveland Indians in 1942. This record has been kept since 1910 in the NL and 1913 in the AL."

The popular refrain I recall in my high school days by my coach that; “a walk is as good as a hit” reminds of Judge being as valuable to the team as he ever has been. Run production at the major league level goes far beyond home runs, and when his 105 runs scored are added in, Judge remains the best choice as the MVP of the Yankees this season. Just saying.

In other news, Didi Gregorius vows to play despite fouling a ball off his calf on Friday night, but it remains Girardi’s call to determine if he does. Gregorius hit a career high in home runs with 21 in that game and continues to pound the ball since his return in May.

The old warhorse, CC Sabathia, is likely to make his next start, despite receiving cortisone shots for the balky knee, which continues to bother him.

Remindings of what Luis Severino accomplished yesterday and what he has done this season for the Yankees is mind-boggling and one of the best feel-good stories about the team.
