Yankees fire back at Rangers and Severino doesn’t use blanks

The Yankees gave the Rangers a dose of their own medicine this afternoon with a come from behind effort as late as the eighth inning in support of yet another overwhelming start by now, safe to say, the ace of their staff.

Yankees fans have come to expect something special every time Luis Severino takes his turn in the rotation. In what is getting to be downright boring, Severino did not disappoint producing another overwhelming performance over his now usual seven innings of work, blowing away ten Rangers batters along the way.

The lone hit Severino gave up was a double to Rangers catcher, Brett Nicholas in the fifth inning, producing the only run of the game for the Strangers, as they’re known in Dallas-Ft.Worth. Severino’s ERA is now a paltry 2.96, and the trend is still down.

The Bombers bats didn’t come alive, and they were held in check by a suddenly revitalized, Andrew Cashner, until the top of the eighth inning, and even then, it was only with a whimper.

But once again it’s Chase Headley‘s name scattered throughout the Yankees Scoring Summary and box score. Headley drove in Todd Frazier with the tying run on a sacrifice fly and followed that up by walking in an insurance run to make the score 3-1.

From there, the ever reliable bullpen took over behind the power of David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman who earned his seventeenth save of the season.

Regrettably, Severino did not figure in the decision, and the win went to Robertson, who is now 7-2 on the season. All of Robertson’s eight pitches were strikes, and Chapman also found the range today throwing eleven of his thirteen pitches for strikes.

The appearance by Chapman to close out a tight game reaffirms Joe Girardi‘s faith in using Chapman in these situations when other choices are available to him.

Both the Twins and Red Sox play tonight.

Following last night’s embarrassing loss, the Yankees needed this game as a picker-upper, but also to stave off the still surging Minnesota Twins, who just won’t go away in the Wild Card race.

It appears Girardi has selected Jordan Montgomery to make the start in tomorrow’s game over Jaime Garcia, who take CC Sabathia‘s turn if that trick knee doesn’t respond quickly to cortisone shots.

Following that game, the Yankees jet home for what should be a fun series at Citi Field to face the displaced Tampa Bay Rays. I was wondering, though, when the home field Rays hit a home run, does the Big Apple rise?
