There’s a segment of Yankees fans that need to grow up. And if all they want is to read their news about the team in small doses with sugar-coated pablum, they need to read the Yankees “Hometown” newspaper and not stop here, where some tough love is applied.
True or false: The Yankees have not been playing well for more than a month, they have a bullpen that is suspect at best, they still need starting pitching, they have surrendered first place, and they’ve fallen from 12 games over .500 to just four over in a matter of weeks.
Apparently, though, some fans would like to read that paragraph this way.
“The Yankees see the addition of Adam Warren as a solution to their overworked, and therefore ineffective bullpen. The team also sees the progress made by Jordan Montgomery, and they hope this has an effect on the rest of the staff, and most notably, Luis Severino. Although the team has struggled in recent weeks, they are still only 4.5 games behind the Red Sox, and they still hold one of the two Wild Card spots.”
There, does that make them feel better? To make a point, here are a few comments drawn from the Yanks Go Yard Facebook Page in recent days reacting to a few of the tough love stories I’ve written. (comments not edited)
Bundy Good This has to be the most anti yankee yankee site ever
Michael Dominic Yanks go yard your on drugs!!!
Sounds like this page need writers, I wanna apply!!!!!!!I have 7x more common sense than anyone working for this company, please contact me if you want good stories written.
Scott Butler I’m pretty sure the holes in the starting rotation and the bullpen are a lot more glaring than 1B. But hey that’s me.
Bundy Good needs to stick with the Daily News. Michael, see below. And Scott, I can only thank you for providing some thoughtful opposition to what I wrote.
Let’s try it another way
Not buying my spin, yet? Try it this way. Let’s say both Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi agree to sit down and take a lie-detector test on the state of the Yankees, eliminating the feel good stuff they have to put out there (no argument with them doing that). And what happens if they had to answer questions like these honestly?

Realistically, would you agree the Yankees need to add a proven number two starter if the team has any chance of matching up against Chris Sale and David Price and getting deep into the playoffs?
Realistically, do you see Ji-Man Choi as the answer to your problems at first base?
Realistically, aren’t you just counting the days to when Aaron Hicks comes back and you can send Clint Frazier back to where he belongs?
Realistically, is Luis Cessa the best you can do as a fifth starter?
Realistically, can you count on Matt Holliday, Jacoby Ellsbury, and CC Sabathia staying healthy from here on in?
Realistically, with all the depth you have, haven’t you reached the bottom of the well?
Realistically, isn’t there something you’re not telling us about Chance Adams?
Realistically, there isn’t a chance in hell that Greg Bird will don the Pinstripes this season, is there?
I could go for days.
Sorry, the buck stops here
And maybe to overstate the point, it reminds of Jack Nicholson’s line at the end of A Few Good Men when he said, “You can’t handle the truth.” And maybe that’s the case with many Yankees fans.
Speaking the “truth” only means that a person is attempting to find the truth. I consider that my job as a writer, to jog the reader’s mind a bit with fresh ideas that may or may not be salient. But they at least are worthy of considering, as Scott did in his comment and many others do as well.
And that’s also the kind of dialog that Yanks Go Yard stands for. And for this writer and fan of the Yankees, love can never afford to be and will never be blind.

And so, for a final time, if you need your news about the Yankees in condensed and Pollyanna platitudes about how great the team is, stop reading my stuff because that isn’t what this is about.
Instead, read the Hometown Newspaper, not only of New York City but also of the New York Yankees, the Daily News. You’ll get your fix there every day.
