The Yankees, even with their loss last night have been on a such a hot streak, you can’t imagine it having a long-term effect.

The Yankees, when thinking of the long term though, one wonders how long the team can keep up their winning ways. It’s still early in the season. Plenty can happen from here.

During most of this early run, the Yankees have been utilizing their speed more than in the recent past. When the power goes out, the team doesn’t shut down. The Bombers manufacture runs, and the speed game has kept opposing pitchers off balance. They’ve been lucky so far, but can they stretch that out over a full season?

The pitching has been nothing short of excellent. Other than the first turn through the rotation, the starters have buckled down, Michael Pineda and Luis Severino have exceeded expectations. Are they for real? Or is this an early season fluke?

The bullpen, which has been even better than the starting five, carries fewer concerns. Still, there are questions about their durability over the course of a full season.

How long can they keep up their run of excellence? Can Joe Girardi keep them fresh without burning them out?

The team has been winning without their starting shortstop, and mostly without their starter catcher. Both Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez are set to rejoin the team in a couple of weeks.

In a sense, it’s as if the team had acquired two bats without having to give anything up.

The question is, how will their return affect the team chemistry? It’s hard to imagine a shortstop who clubbed 20 home runs not improving the team. Harder than to believe a catcher with also hit 20 homers, in just 53 games, being anything but a huge boost.

While the Yankees have been winning in their absence, their return will most likely give the team an extra shot in the arm.

Last but not least, is it still too early to tell if this team is for real? Yes and no. While an early start doesn’t guarantee anything, it’s better than playing from behind.

That’s what happened last year, with the Yankees attempting to contend in the late part of the season. Their slow start caught up to them as they stumbled to the finish line.

So, can these 2017 Yankees keep this up? Sure they can. They just have to make sure they don’t get too ahead of themselves. Enjoy the moment, if you will. This is a very likable team that has seemed to gel. As long as they don’t lose focus, they should be very real contenders.
