The Yankees looked sluggish with the bats today but still managed to come away with a win, their sixth straight, against the Cardinals at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees tested a basic law of physics today which says that a body in motion tends to stay in motion. This team remains in motion after snaring another win against the struggling Cardinals as their record now moves to 7-4 on the season.

CC Sabathia performed like the polished veteran he is with his third consecutive quality start in putting the Cardinals away efficiently and decisively.

He didn’t get much support from the offense today as Yankee hitters had a hard time putting their bats on the ball, striking out a whopping fifteen times while managing only four hits. They scored a lone run in the second inning on a wild pitch that was uncorked by Carlos Martinez, and Sabathia managed to make that run hold up until he ran out of gas in the seventh inning.

Aaron Boone provides perspective on the Yankees Sunday morning in an exclusive interview with Yanks Go Yard. Don’t miss it.

Once again the Yankees bullpen was faultless as Adam Warren came in to finish out the eighth following a home run to Jedd Gyorko, throwing only 11 pitches. The Yankees had another scare into them when Stephen Piscotty hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth off Tyler Clippard. But Clippard settled down, eventually striking out the side to register the save.

The combination of the Baltimore Orioles hot start (7-2) and the Yankees recent surge makes the American League East Standings appear to be upside-down, with the Blue Jays rendered to the basement based on their horrific 1-8 start and the Red Sox logging in playing only .500 baseball.

Yankees Take Advantage Of Opponents Mistakes

Carlos Martinez, who is being counted on heavily by the Cardinals, appeared to have his arm in the game, but not his head as he was able to pile up the strikeouts. But he was also was charged with a costly throwing error on a ball hit back to him by Aaron Hicks that allowed Ronald Torreyes, who seems to be in the middle of everything these days, to score the team’s second run in the sixth inning.

Chris Carter followed with a single knocking in Hicks making the score 3-0. Carter’s hit was also the hit for the team’s first with runners in scoring position in the last three games.

The Yankees didn’t seem to be too impressed with the record contract for a catcher that the Cards gave Yadier Molina, as Chase Headley and Jacoby Ellsbury repeated Friday night’s tally with one apiece again today.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals continue to hit bottom, especially with their bats. They do not have a regular in the lineup hitting .300, and they are playing in a Division where they can’t afford to fall too far behind (the Cubs). Even Dexter Fowler, the free agent signing that was supposed to put them over the top, is hitting a woeful .140.

At the rate they are going, even a wild card spot seems out of the question, and already things are beginning to get a little testy in St. Louis.

The final game of the series is an ESPN Sunday Night Baseball telecast in which the Yankees will send Michael Pineda to the hill with the hope that he can repeat the effort he gave in his last start and allowing the Yankees to convert their second consecutive three-game series sweep.
