The Yankees have made very clear where their budding All-Star infielder will begin the 2017 season. But he’s making it very clear that he intends to have the last laugh.

Yankees General Manager, Brian Cashman, has etched in stone or maybe on the whiteboard in his office, a message to himself that reads, “Gleyber Torres will be optioned to Double-A Trenton to begin the 2017 season.”

Every day, he looks at the message and repeats it to remind himself that no matter what this kid does on the field, he’s going to New Jersey, not the Bronx.

It’s almost become like Torres is saying to himself, “Okay, you guys do what you gotta do and I’ll just keep doing what I gotta do.”

In so many ways, the scenario evolving around Torres is a comical respite from the boredom of a spring training that seems to have no end. Because here you have a kid that’s doing algebra on his own while his teacher is still giving decimals and percents homework.

Torres is a good student, though, and he’s not disrupting the classroom. Instead, he’s doing all of the assigned homework plus a bunch of “extra credit” that he turns into his perplexed teacher almost every day.

And so it goes. Gleyber Torres played second base for the Yankees yesterday in a 10-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. His line for the game reads 2-3, two runs scored, three driven in with a double and a home run, and a spring batting average of .455. His only blemish, he made an error on a ground ball, his third of the preseason. Oh, and he also has the same Slugging Percentage as Greg Bird, who’s been tearing the cover off the ball all spring.

It’s almost become like Torres is saying to himself, “Okay, you guys do what you gotta do, and I’ll just keep doing what I gotta do.” And if he were that type of kid, you can almost hear him snickering in the background.

Meanwhile, the folks over at the Yankees YES network are talking about having a camera crew stationed in Trenton so that in-game updates can be fed to the broadcast booth at Yankee Stadium and Yankees fans can get their daily Gleyber Torres fix.

I’m just kidding, but it’s almost reached that point where you just can’t let this kid go. And I don’t mean that literally because the Yankees will let him go eventually – as well they should.

Other Yankees Game News

In other news from the game yesterday, Luis Severino reminded everyone why the Yankees still believe in his ability, turning in three solid innings of work. Facing thirteen batters, Severino gave up a solo homer run while striking out four.

Johnny Barbato couldn’t get anyone out, taking the loss and diminishing his chances of landing a spot in the bullpen when the team heads North.

Greg Bird had two more hits, including a triple.

Tonight, the Phillies (9-8) travel to Boss Field to face the Yankees (13-5) in a night contest scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. EST.
