After setting up the New York Yankees for their first rebuild in decades, General Manager Brian Cashman seems like a safe bet to be at the helm of the club for the foreseeable future.

Somewhat paradoxically, the New York Yankees being so bad in 2016 may have provided General Manager Brian Cashman with additional job security.

The fact that he was able to convince Yankees ownership to actually sell at the trade deadline is all the proof one needs as to his clout within the organization. The Yankees have literally never sold at the deadline before. It is just not done, even when it should be.

Fortunately, Hal Steinbrenner is not his father, and he was able to put his pride aside and listen to his top baseball man.

More from Yankees News

Brian Cashman has been the New York Yankees GM since 1998. He’s the third longest tenured general manager in Major League Baseball behind only Billy Beane and Brian Sabean. Despite the team’s struggles the past few seasons, it kind of looks like the post is his for as long as he wants it.

Yankees fans like to joke about Cashman being named GM-for-Life by the Steinbrenners, but there may be some truth to that at this point.

The three year contract he signed in October of 2014 expires after next season, but since the Yankees have no real expectations to win next year, Cashman will presumably be in no danger of losing his job.

The 49-year-old executive seems to be the primary driving force behind this rebuild. He turned the Yankees farm system into arguably the best in baseball in less than a week.

Fans undoubtedly won’t be thrilled with the inevitable losing next year, but with much of the farm’s top talent nearly MLB ready, they may not have to wait long before they have a pretty exciting club to watch.

At this point, the only way Brian Cashman is leaving the Yankees GM post is if he is promoted or he decides to leave on his own terms. He is one of the most respected execs in the game, even more so after the accolades from his recent trades. Perhaps only Brian Sabean can match his influence within a major league organization.

While every team’s fans inevitably hate their general manager, Brian Cashman has done a remarkable job over the last 19 years over what is probably the toughest position in all of sports.
