Yanks Go Yard Radio Show: Rockies-Yankees Preview (6/21-6/22)

On last night’s Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, we looked ahead to the Rockies visit to Yankee Stadium this week.
On last night’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, I started off the episode by talking about the New York Yankees (34-35) taking three out of four from the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. New York finished their road trip at 3-3, but they remain six games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East.
However, the Yankees could be getting some reinforcements by the weekend as first baseman Mark Teixeira is beginning a rehab assignment tonight at triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre as he recovers from his knee injury. Tonight, the Yankees will begin a nine-game homestand and their last homestand of the first half of the season against the Colorado Rockies (33-36).
Last week at Coors Field, the Rockies won both games against the Yankees while scoring 19 runs. But, Colorado had its struggles over the weekend against the Marlins as they lost three out of four games. Nevertheless, Walt Weiss’ club is only 3.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
In last night’s win against the Marlins, shortstop Trevor Story hit his 18th home run of the season. Story is second on the team in home runs behind third baseman Nolan Arenado (.288, 20 home runs, 57 RBI’s. Arenado hit .333 with one home run and four RBI’s against the Yankees last week.

Since the last Yankees series, the Rockies have had two key players go on the 15-day disabled list in starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood and left fielder Gerardo Parra. Chatwood has the most wins of any pitcher in Colorado’s rotation (eight) while Parra was having a decent season in his first year with the Rockies (.263, five home runs, 27 RBI’s).
To talk more about the Rockies, my guest on the show for the second consecutive week was the editor of Rox Pile, Kevin Henry. Kevin gave his take on the Rockies’ struggles in South Beach, where the team stands in the Wild Card race, the impact of losing Chatwood and Parra., and could we see right fielder Carlos Gonzalez (.311, 15 home runs, 37 RBI’s) dealt by the August 1 trade deadline?

In addition, Kevin and I broke down the two pitching matchups, which are Chad Bettis vs. Ivan Nova tonight and Jon Gray vs. C.C. Sabathia tomorrow. Plus, we gave our players to watch in this two game series and took a closer look at the rest of the National League West. Right now, the Giants are ahead of the Dodgers by 5.5 games.
