The New York couldn’t get it done in their first extra inning game of 2016. Starting pitcher Michael Pineda pitched well enough to win, but the bats couldn’t get much going against the Oakland Athletics.

Pineda threw six innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, and struck out seven. Chasen Shreve, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller all followed with scoreless innings from the seventh inning to the ninth inning. Shreve and Miller struck out one, while Betances struck out two.

The Yankees got things going early as Carlos Beltran doubled with two outs and Mark Teixeira followed with a walk in the first inning. Alex Rodriguez singled in Beltran to put the Yankees on the board, as he continues to get out of his early-season slump.

Oakland answered with a run of their own in the top of the second inning, as Pineda surrendered three singles. After striking out Stephen Vogt, Jed Lowrie singled, Khris Davis flew out and Yonder Alonso singled to start a rally. Marcus Semien tied the game on a single of his own, scoring Lowrie.

Both teams were shut down until the fifth inning, when the Yankees broke the tie. Didi Gregorius singled to lead off the inning, but was picked off. Brett Gardner eventually walked and Starlin Castro doubled to put runners at second and third. Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Gardner. Teixeira walked to keep things going, but Rodriguez popped out to end the inning.

The Athletics answered right away again, as they tied it up in the top of the sixth inning. Danny Valencia tripled to start the inning and Lowrie singled him in two batters later.

Both starters were done by the end of the sixth inning, leaving it up to the bullpens. Oakland’s bullpen threw 5.1 innings, allowed just one hit and struck out four batters.

New York’s bullpen went five innings, allowed one run on four hits, while striking out five.

Johnny Barbato allowed the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 11th inning, after pitching well the inning before. With one out Lowrie doubled and advanced to third on Davis’ ground out. Mark Canha then singled to bring in Lowrie and put Oakland up for the first time of the game.

Barbato allowed just the one run over two innings, while allowing two hits and striking out one.

The Yankees couldn’t get anything going against the Athletics’ bullpen, getting just one hit. That hit belonged to Chase Headley, who led off the ninth inning with one. Manager Joe Girardi brought in Jacoby Ellsbury, who got the night off against the lefty Eric Surkamp, to pinch run. Ellsbury was caught stealing while Gardner was up, ending any chance that inning. Ellsbury’s rough 2016 got worse with that play.

After Ellsbury was caught stealing the Yankees went down in order through the rest of the game. Bad base running and not stringing together hits cost the Yankees tonight.

The two teams play again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
