I can’t help but think that the battle for backup catcher is going to be more competitive than people are figuring. After years of being pinned down in the minors, except for a few limited stints with the big league club, Austin Romine is yet again aiming to crack the Yankees Opening Day roster. Romine got off to a good start, as his pitch-framing abilities were sharp against the Tigers, and his bat (Romine’s largest-known weakness) showed up to the field as well. Romine collected two hits, including a ground-ball single that found just enough real estate to score speedy top-prospect Jorge Mateo and tie the game in the bottom of the 9th.
