Amid David Price Signing, The Yankees Should Stick to the Plan

Several years ago when ‘the boss’ George Steinbrenner III was still around, you could view the Red Sox massive David Price signing as an immediate precursor to a bigger Yankee move.

Heck, if David Price signed on Tuesday with the Red Sox, the ‘Evil Empire’ would have signed Zack Greinke and Johnny Cueto on Wednesday and maybe even Ben Zobrist on Thursday.

Nowadays, with the partnership of Hank and Hal Steinbrenner at the helm, the Yankees will look at the David Price signing, let it set in, and continue to stay the course.

Under Brian Cashman’s watchful eye, the Yankees are in the midst of putting together a core that can lead the Yankees to another long run of consistent October baseball, similar to the Bronx Bombers of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. And the best to way to do that is to stick to their current plan, and not let big divisional signings sway them off course – even if it means taking a back seat to the Boston Red Sox in 2016.

Yes, long-term deals are off the table for now, but they won’t be forever. When Carlos Beltran ($15,000,000) and Mark Teixeira ($23,125,000) come off the books in 2016, southpaw veteran CC Sabathia ($50,000,000) in 2017 and Alex Rodriguez ($40,000,000) in 2018, the floodgates will open for the New York Yankees.

Interestingly enough, there will be a plethora of free-agent super stars available, including Bryce Harper and Matt Harvey in 2019 and Mike Trout in 2021. The Yankees will once again have the luxury of opening up a blank checkbook during free-agency, but they must choose wisely and bring in the star who fits perfectly with their new core of young players.

Picture the Core Four of Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada and the Yankees bringing in guys like Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius to mold them into a perennial power.

Now it’ll be Luis Severino, Gregory Bird, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez with the Yankees looking to bring in a guy like Harper or Trout.

Patience, my fellow Yankee fans, is a virtue.
