Entering the 2015 season, Alex Rodriguez probably had less supporters than any player in baseball. Not only did fans of the Yankees no longer support him, but the organization did not either. While Rodriguez still had some fans willing to get past his mistakes, myself included, the majority felt that Rodriguez had no place on the Yankees roster.
Returning from a major hip injury, and a suspension that kept him away for all of 2014, Rodriguez has shattered expectations, hitting 33 home runs, his highest total since 2008. While there are many deserving candidates in the American League, such as Prince Fielder, Chris Davis, and even Rodriguez’s teammate, Mark Teixeira, none stands out like A-Rod.
Each players turn around is worthy of the award, but entering the season, Rodriguez was the only one in danger of not making the team. You could find people who would bank on Fielder, Davis, and/or Teixeira bouncing back, but A-Rod? Not many would take that bet.
Back in Spring Training, even Rodriguez himself was unaware of what he was capable of doing for the Yankees this season. The fact that he not only made the roster, but shattered even the most optimistic expectations makes him the most deserving candidate. Think about it, in Spring Training, did anyone predict Rodriguez would carry the Yankees offense for much of the season?
While many still can never fully accept or root for Rodriguez, in 2015, he improved in all aspects of life, on and off the baseball field, growing into a leader, and staying free of controversy. Some may feel that since Rodriguez was returning from a suspension he caused that he shouldn’t be eligible for the award, but remember, last time we saw Rodriguez he was injured and struggling.
2015 saw A-Rod add many milestones to his already long list of baseball accomplishments. It would be fitting if it ended with another award, albeit one he has never won before, the AL Comeback Player of the Year.
What do you think Yankees fans? Should A-Rod win the 2015 AL Comeback Player of the Year Award, or are one of the other candidates more deserving? Let us know in the comments below.
