When Nathan Eovaldi wen’t down with a season-ending elbow injury everyone thought the Yankees pitching staff would implode and cause them to miss the post-season.
Flash forward to today and the Yankees post-season magic number is now down to four, and thanks to some timely pitching from their 28-year old right-hander Adam Warren, their pitching staff doesn’t look so questionable after all.
Last night Warren made his first home start at the stadium since June 19th, and after tossing six solid innings of one run baseball in which he ultimately earned a 2-1 win, the former North Carolina Tar Heel reinforced his underrated importance to this pitching staff.
It was just Warren’s third start since being reinstated into the starting rotation from the bullpen, but he improved to 7-7 with a 3.37 ERA, earning his first major league win since July 25th.
Perhaps more importantly, Warren has improved to 4-1 with a 2.11 ERA at home in the not-so-pitcher-friendly Yankee Stadium. Also, he has allowed just three runs or fewer in each of his last 12 starts, tiring a franchise record held by ‘Louisiana Lightning’ Ron Guidry that dates back to 1981.
It was also the first time Warren hurled more than four consecutive innings since June 25th, as the Yankees continue to stretch him out, putting him on track to start an inning limit-less ball game in the playoffs should the Yankees decide to roster him in October – which they absolutely should.
