On Wednesday’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, I started off the episode by talking about the New York Yankees (77-62) recent series against the Baltimore Orioles. While CC Sabathia made his return to the rotation last night, the Yankees’ bats were the story. After getting eight runs on Monday afternoon, including a game-winning home run by Greg Bird, the Bronx Bombers scored four runs over the final 18 innings of the series (both losses).

Of course, the Yankees got more bad injury news this week as Nathan Eovaldi will miss the remainder of the regular season due to inflammation in his elbow. Adam Warren pitched 2.2 innings in last night’s loss, but it looks like he will re-enter the rotation at some point next week. The Yankees remain 1.5 games behind the Blue Jays (79-60) in the AL East as the two teams begin a four game series at the Stadium tomorrow since tonight’s game was cancelled.

This week, the Blue Jays lost two out of three games to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. One of the problems for the Blue Jays lately has been the fact they have given up ten or more runs in three of their last six games. Nevertheless, Toronto has won 26 of their last 35 games. Designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion (.269, 30 HR, 85 RBI’s) has hit .342 since the All-Star Break and recently had a 26-game hitting streak.

Despite the Blue Jays’ great offense, the big news around John Gibbons’ club was that one of their starting pitchers is back in the rotation. While Mark Buehrle currently is out with a shoulder injury, Marcus Stroman is back. Stroman, who will pitch in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader, has been out since March after tearing his ACL during spring training.

To get more information on the Blue Jays, I spoke with Shaun Doyle, the co-editor over at Jays Journal. Shaun gave his thoughts on the reaction in Toronto this series, Marcus Stroman’s return, and who are some September callups that could help the Blue Jays down the stretch. Here are some other topics Shaun and I discussed:

  • Bigger series for the Blue Jays or Yankees?
  • Ryan Goins having a solid second half at second base for the Blue Jays
  • Pitching Matchup Breakdown
  • David Price has given up no more than three runs in his last seven starts
  • Luis Severino induced 11 groundball outs in his last start (most in a game this year)
  • Marco Estrada has walked three batters in each of his last two starts vs. NYY (12.1 IP, 2 ER, 6 H)
  • Ivan Nova has given up no more than three runs in four of his last five outings
  • What to expect from Stroman on Saturday
  • Michael Pineda has a 1.29 ERA in two outings against Toronto this season
  • R.A. Dickey is 7-0 since the All-Star Break (11 starts)
  • Yankees make right decision pitching Masahiro Tanaka on regular rest
  • Blue Jays hitters to watch: Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson
  • Yankees hitters to watch: Alex Rodriguez and Brett Gardner
