Yankees Recap: Luis Severino Earns Win No. 2 in Atlanta

Tonight the Yankees handed the ball off to rookie phenom Luis Severino in an inter-league matchup against Matt Wisler and the Atlanta Braves, and the 21-year old flame thrower picked up right where he left off.

The Yankees gave Severino some early run support in the top off the first when Jacoby Ellsbury crossed home plate after a wild pitch that actually went off of Christian Bethancourt‘s shin guard and caromed into the stands.

With a 1-0 lead, Severino went on to scatter just four hits over six shutout innings, fanning five Braves batters while walking three, including a big inning ending double play in the bottom of the first to ex-Yankee Nick Swisher. Severino and the rest of the Yankees bullpen held 10 Atlanta Braves base runners in scoring position, and turned in quite the performance tonight.

The Yankees added another run in the seventh inning on a Didi Gregorius double that plated Chase Headley, putting them up 2-0 at the time.

The Braves answered right back in their half of the seventh when an error charged to Justin Wilson on an attempted double play between him Didi Gregorius was dropped and allowed Bethancourt to cross the plate.

With the score 2-1, the Yankees added some insurance in the top of the eighth when the Atlanta home-town hero Brian McCann smacked a double off the center field wall that scored Chris Young, who was pinch-running for Carlos Beltran.

Behind a nifty no-look back handed snag that ended the seventh inning by Dellin Betances and a 1-2-3 ninth inning save from Andrew Miller, the Yankees wen’t on to win 3-1.

On a quick side note, Severino got two attempts to secure his first major league hit while playing in a National League ball park. While he didn’t record a hit, he actually sent a deep fly ball to the warning track that had to be hauled in by Nick Markakis in his first ever major league at bat… the kid can do it all.

Severino improved to 2-2 with a 2.17 ERA, and as it stands now, the Yankees now trail the Toronto Blue Jays by 1.5 games for first place in the A.L. East.

Tomorrow ‘Nasty’ Nathan Eovaldi will take the hill in Atlanta for a 1:35 pm EST matinee against Atlanta ace Julio Teheran. Eovaldi is 2-3 with a 2.42 ERA in 12 career starts against the Braves.
