New York Yankees News: Is Nathan Eovaldi the Ace of the Yankees Pitching Staff?

During last nights key 1-0 victory over the Houston Astros, Nathan Eovaldi earned a no-decision in another dominant pitcher performance.

His overall record remained at 13-2, but he lowered his ERA to 4.00 as he shut down a playoff bound Houston Astros roster by scattering just four hits over eight innings while striking out seven and again reaching triple digits on the radar gun with his fastball as he pitched late into the ballgame.

The Yankees went on to beat the Astros with a run in the top of the ninth, but Nathan Eovaldi was obviously the player of the game, and perhaps the newfound ace of the New York Yankees pitching staff.

In a must win situation that propelled the Yankees back into a first place tie with the Toronto Blue Jays just one day after their staff potentially lost veteran leader CC Sabathia for the year, Nathan Eovaldi stepped up and delivered his finest performance of the season.

"“Tonight was the best I’ve felt,” Eovaldi told Ryan Hatch of NJ.com after the game."

Eovaldi tied a career-high eight innings pitched, and over his last 12 starts, he’s posted a remarkable 8-0 record with a 2.93 ERA, the best line of any Yankees pitcher currently on the staff.

Yes, Eovaldi pitched himself into some trouble early, but he rebounded well and kept the Astros 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

"“He was filthy,” Brian McCann said from behind the dish. “He did whatever he wanted tonight and that was the game.”"

In lieu of Sabathia’s injury, Eovaldi is the Yankees new No.3 starter by default, but as of late he looks as if he’s their ace.

10 weeks ago Eovaldi was nearly run out of the Bronx. On June 16th he was 5-2 with a 5.12 ERA after allowing eight runs against his former Miami Marlins and failing to make it out of the first inning. Yankees fans and the New York Media were calling for Eovaldi to be cut. Just the thought of the Yankees trusting Eovaldi to start a playoff game back than was non-existent.

Fast forward to today, and Eovaldi is certainly on track to start a playoff game in October for the New York Yankees, and maybe even game one, and the fans would back that decision 100%.
