New York Yankees Editorial: Did Posada Deserve To Have His Jersey Retired?
As you all know, Jorge Posada‘s number 20 was retired as the New York Yankees took on the Clevaland Indians on ‘Jorge Posada Day’ this past Saturday. The last week and a half has been very special for the organization having HOPE week along with the retiring of two very special jersey numbers. Joining Posada was Andy Pettitte on Sunday, however, some have a problem with this.
Andy Pettitte’s success is nothing unknown to baseball fans everywhere. 19 wins and 263 postseason innings with a 3.63 ERA which led to five world series championships. Pettitte is undoubtedly one of the best postseason pitchers in the history of the game, and who was catching a majority of those? Jorge Posada.
Posada’s bar might be higher with the Yankees having one of the best catchers in the history of baseball, along with the best catcher, but for the team as a whole, Posada is right behind them. Did Posada have the overall skill of Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey? No, but as I just said, they are both right in the top 10-best ever. Posada’s numbers weren’t something unheard of, but during his time he was always in the conversation for best catchers in the league.
The ‘Core Four’ has that historic name for a reason, if one player wasn’t in that group the success that was generated might not have even happened. Jorge almost always did what he had to, was it flashy and climactic? No, but that’s not makes great players, it comes down to getting the job done, and Jorge more often did just that, as well as the other parts of the Core Four.
Do you think Posada deserves his retirement? Do you agree that without Posada some of the success might not have happened, or was this retiring just so he wasn’t left out?
