New York Yankees Editorial: What Should The New York Yankees Do With Greg Bird?

On Thursday, another piece of the future was called up for the Yankees, Greg Bird. Garrett Jones was designated for assignment to make room for the young first basemen. Bird has not played in a few games but was able to record his first hit on Saturday. With Greg Bird only able to play first base, what will his role be with the team?

Greg Bird arrived to the Yankees on Thursday with a lot of hype, as one of the prospects Brian Cashman refused to trade. The problem with Bird is that Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez are in front of him. These two players have been the backbone of the Yankee offense. With these two players in front of Bird it is a real question on how much playing time he will receive? Joe Girardi has stated that Bird will only play when a right-handed pitcher is starting for the opposing team. With such high value on a prospect it could be better to keep Greg Bird in Triple-A, and let him get more at-bats.

On the other side it may be more beneficial for Greg Bird to stay up with the Yankees. Greg Bird and his youth has been able to give a little boost to the club, as the Yankees have not lost since he was called up to play. Bird will be able to learn how to be an everyday major league player who has been through the wars, like a Mark Teixeira. Brian Cashman has talked about calling up a number of players in September to help the Yankees reach the playoffs. If Bird is sent back down, he will most certainly be called back up in September, so why not let him stay with the club through the month of August?

It looks like Greg Bird will get a good long look at first base these last two months and will be part of the youth movement the Yankees are trying to incorporate. Who knows, maybe Aaron Judge is the next to come up for the Yankees.
