Sunday was a low point for the New York Yankees. Not only did the Yankees get swept by the second place team in the AL East, the team also had a few incidents with the fans. The first incident was a bizarre one that featured Brett Gardner getting hit with a ball that was thrown back. The other incident was with Mark Teixeira reaching over for a foul ball.
When the opposing teams hits a home run usually the fans throw the ball back on the field. Fan Henry Rowengartner caught the home run ball and as the ball flew back to the field, hit Brett Gardner in the head. It could have been a serious injury, but all is fine and just one of those bizarre things that only happens in baseball.
"‘It’s been going on for years,’ Manager Joe Girardi said. ‘I don’t know if I’ve seen anyone hit before. It’s dangerous when fans throw objects on the field because players really aren’t looking for that. I don’t know if that’s ever going to change; I’d just ask our fans to be careful.’"
While Brett Gardner was a rare occurrence, Mark Teixeira incident is more common. In the top of the ninth, Tex reached over the stands for a foul ball and was hit in the shoulder by a fan trying to recover the ball. Tex was very upset and said a few words that children should not hear. After the game, and a tough series, Tex tried to lighten up the room with a joke.
"‘We know you’re upset; we lost three in a row; we’re sorry,’ he joked. ‘But just keep it to insults, not assaults.’"
Sunday was a frustrating day for the Yankees. Looking at the glass half full, the Yankees are still in first place, they will still score lots of runs, the Blue Jays will not stay this hot and most likely, Brett Gardner will not be hit by a ball thrown from the stands again.
