New York Yankees Editorial: Breaking Down Yankees Spot Starting Candidates

facebooktwitterreddit

After Monday’s day of the rest the Yankees will be super busy. They will play the next 16 days straight and will be playing 22 games in the next 23 days. This stretch could very well determine the fate of the Yankees and their post-season chances. With the Yankees watching the innings limit on multiple pitchers, it looks like the Yankees will use a spot start here and there to get through this stretch. Here’s a look at all the potential spot start candidates;

Adam Warren

Warren started the year in the Yankees starting  rotation and was really pitching well, but lost his spot when Ivan Nova came back from Tommy John. Since then he has been in the bullpen without a real clear-cut role. Warren is not as stretched out as he was in the beginning of the season, but can still throw about 60 pitches and give the Yankees a few solid innings.

Bryan Mitchell

Mitchell has been called up multiple times for bullpen help, but in the minor leagues he has been a starting pitcher. Mitchell is stretched out enough to start and give 5 innings of work. The last time the Yankees sent him down it was not for performance, but rather to keep him stretched out. I believe he is the most likely out of the four candidates to get the spot start.

Chris Capuano

The Yankees old pal Chris Capuano may be back in pinstripes. Cap was designated for assignment but no one picked him up, so he went to the Yankee’s Triple-A team. His last appearance was horrendous, as he was couldn’t even make it out of the first inning. Out of the four pitchers, he has the most experience and with a lefty heavy line up, he could be the best option.

Diego Moreno

Diego Moreno was the pitcher who came into relief after Capuano’s terrible start and was masterful. He was able to give the Yankees five and a third hitless innings. Shortly after this outing, he was sent to the DL, but fortunately he should be off the DL soon. He probably has least amount of odds to spot start out of the four aforementioned pitchers, but who knows.

If I was the manager I would go with Adam Warren, he is more comfortable as a starter and already has proven success out of the Yankees starting rotation.
