New York Yankees News: SS Prospects Jorge Mateo and Tyler Wade Promoted

During the days leading up to the MLB Trade Deadline less than one week ago, a lot of talk surrounding the Yankees was centered around GM Brian Cashman refusing to part ways with top prospects Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Gregory Bird and Jorge Mateo.

While Severino already made headlines with his stellar major league debut last night, he isn’t the only ‘untouchable’ prospect making noise in the Yankees organization.

Yesterday the Yankees promoted their shortstops at each minor league level, meaning that their pair of 20-year old shortstop standouts are ready for the next level. Jorge Mateo was promoted from the Single A-Charleston RiverDogs to High-A Tampa and Tyler Wade was promoted from High-A Tampa to the Double-A Trenton Thunder.

Mateo, who was at the center of Yankees trade rumors surrounding Craig Kimbrel leading up to the deadline, is ranked by MLB.com as the Yankees No. 3 overall prospect. In 2015 alone, he has stolen 71 bases to date, which would be tops in the entire MLB. Prior to being called up, Mateo was hitting .268 with two home run and 33 RBI.

Wade, on the other hand, is ranked by MLB.com as the Yankees No. 11 overall prospect, and was hitting .280 with two homers and 28 RBI down in Tampa.

It’ll be interesting to see how each shortstop fairs at the next major league level. Keep an eye out for both of them in our Minor League Player of the Week Series, released weekly each Monday on Yanks Go Yard!
