New York Yankees Editorial: David Price In Pinstripes?

The New York Yankees  are certainly in need of starting pitching. With the inconsistency from CC Sabathia and the lingering health concerns surrounding the rest of their pitching staff, Brian Cashman needs to do something in order for this team to compete for playoffs in the later months of the season.

One interesting name that comes into play is David Price, who according to Fox Sports, is being made available by the Detroit Tigers.

The Yankees were certainly interested in acquiring David Price during last years trade deadline, but their AL East Rival Tampa Bay Rays elected to send him out of the division and trade him to Detroit. Now, with reports leaking that the Tigers are looking to shop him before the trade deadline, this could be the perfect time for the Yankees to strike a deal and bring the 29-year old southpaw back to the AL East.

However, a couple factors will come into play here.

For starters, the asking price on Price is likely going to be very high. After all, the Tigers gave up Drew Smyly, Willy Adames, and Austin Jackson in order to acquire Price’s services last summer in a three-team trade. A similar package coming from New York might not be worth it considering David Price is an impending free-agent at the end of this season.

Brian Cashman has already said he is “very hesitant” to give up key players and prospects, despite the market having solid starting pitching available. This also meaning if the they were to take part in a trade, it would have to be something clear as day, and two years ago that could’ve been the case when teams were trading for a year and a half of control on Price, but now I don’t believe it is here.

Also, the Yankees would have to compete and try and outbid teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, who probably covet David Price more than any other team in baseball. The Dodgers were believed to be the runner-up to the Detroit Tigers at last years deadline and Chicago Cubs skipper Joe Maddon is waiting with open arms for a reunion with his former ace during their time together with the Rays.

Of course, all three-teams can play coy and elect to stick with their guns and try and throw big-money at David Price this Winter when he becomes a free-agent for the first time in his career, but I guess time will tell.
