On last night’s edition of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the show by talking about how the New York Yankees (46-39) took two out of three from the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium. First baseman Mark Teixeira was the star of the series at the plate. On Wednesday night, he went 2-for-3 with two home runs in a 5-2 win.
During this past series, there was also the return of closer Andrew Miller and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the active roster. Miller had one save on Tuesday, but gave up a two-run homer to Marcus Semien in the bottom of the ninth. As for Ellsbury, he went 2-for-8 with a walk and two RBI’s (both RBI’s came in Thursday’s 6-2 win. In addition, Brett Gardner was named as an injury replacement to the All-Star Game for Alex Gordon during yesterday’s win.

To finish up the first half of the season, the Bronx Bombers will head to Fenway Park tonight to begin a three game series against the Boston Red Sox (41-45). Even though the Red Sox had a horrible start to their season, including manager John Farrell and general manager Ben Cherington being on the hot seat, Boston has found a way to right the ship and get back in the race in the AL East.
Coming into tonight, the Red Sox are 14-7 in their last 21 games and are 5.5 games behind New York in the division. One of the main reasons for that is the return of left fielder Hanley Ramirez to the lineup. Ramirez is hitting .272 this season with 18 home runs and 43 RBI’s. During the month of July, the Red Sox are fifth in the American League in runs scored with 43.
While the starting pitching is still the weak point of the team,), the one pitcher that has stepped up is Clay Buchholz. Buchholz, who will pitch tonight against Michael Pineda, has won four consecutive starts and went 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA during the month of June. That being said, one pitcher that has struggled mightily is Rick Porcello. The former Tigers’ pitcher is 5-9 with a 5.90 ERA and recently snapped a seven start losing streak.
To talk more about the Red Sox, I spoke with Drew Peabody, one of the writers at BoSox Injection about Boston’s recent success, All-Star utility player Brock Holt, and what the team should do with struggling first baseman Mike Napoli (.192, 10 HR, 30 RBI’s). Here are more of the topics Drew and I discussed:
