New York Yankees Editorial: It’s Okay Alex Rodriguez Didn’t Make The All-Star Game

When the All-Star reserves were announced, one of the names that could have been there that wasn’t picked was Alex Rodriguez. Players are going to drop throughout the week, so it’s conceivable he could be added at some point.

The game is going to get a pretty good rating anyway, but A-Rod being in there would help it even more, especially late. Could you imagine the AL down one with two outs in the ninth and A-Rod sent up to face Arolids Chapman? That would be fun. The players actually didn’t even want him there, even though Alex is eighth in OPS.

Ned Yost talked about the thought process for the decision not to even have him on the fan vote five.

"“We talked about A-Rod a lot,” Yost said. “You look back at this five-man vote and we have three infielders, two outfielders, and we felt that it was important that we don’t – we have Brock Holt that can play anywhere in the infield, but any other position we have a starter and a backup. In the outfield we have three starters and three backups. So I just felt very strongly that if we could get another infielder or another outfielder out of that five-man vote it would help us. That’s what went in that decision.”"

I may be in the minority on this, but I’m fine with Alex not being in the game. He’s old. He could use the week off.

It’s more important for him to be good down the stretch of the season. Yes, this All-Star game counts and all the malarkey that Bud Selig created after the tie, but if A-Rod isn’t good the rest of the season, the Yankees may not even get to October.

Rodriguez saw all of his numbers dip except for RBI between May and June. He turns 40 in 19 days.

Let A-Rod rest so he can be an All-Star in October. Not July.
