Class A Short Season: Staten Island Yankees

The Staten Island Yankees wen’t 5-2 this week and improved their overall record to 10-7. Staff-writer Ricky Keeler was in attendance for their game on the fourth of july, you can find his recap here.

Player of the Week: Jake Hernandez, 23, C

Jake Hernandez, a catcher drafted out of the University of Southern California in the 22nd round of the 2010 MLB Draft is on a roll so far with Staten Island. After recording at least one hit in each of his last seven games, Hernandez now leads the entire Staten Island roster with a .354 batting average. Hernandez recorded four multi-hit games this week, including a three-hit game on June 30th during a 5-3 win over State College.

Pitcher of the Week: Luis Cedeno, 12, P

Luis Cedeno has continued to be impressive for Staten Island throughout the early parts of their 2015 season. This week, the Puerto De la Cruz, Venezuelan native recorded a three inning save against State College on June 30th. He scattered three hits and a walk, but held the Spikes scoreless en route to the save. He followed up that performance with a gem against the Hudson Valley Renegades, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings while striking out three and scattering just four hits. It was his second win of the season as a member of the Staten Island Yankees.
