New York Yankees Editorial: The Yankees Living In The Past Is Hurting Their Present

facebooktwitterreddit

We all knew this move was coming. The New York Yankees continue to act like Ricky Bobby and not know what to do with their hands when it comes to developing young pitchers.

First it was the Joba rules, which basically ruined Joba Chamberlain‘s career. Then they didn’t know what to do with Phil Hughes. Does he start? Does he relieve? He finally escaped the Yankees indecision and went on to pitch pretty well for the Minnesota Twins.

Now we get to this year and before we get to that, I’m going to talk about the San Francisco Giants.

Why? Well, the Giants staff is starting to get healthy and Tim Lincecum, who is struggling as a starter to the bullpen. Why? They have a culture of winning. They have a culture of developing players and when players aren’t doing well, they move them to other roles.

Which brings us to CC Sabathia. The Yankees version of Lincecum. This is what Brian Cashman said on CC.

"“He’s still competing and finding himself,” Cashman said."

At what point will he find himself? We are just a week and a half from the All-Star Break. How much time does one need to find himself?

Yes, Adam Warren has already surpassed his career high in innings, but if the intention is to make a guy a starter down the line, he’s going to have to surpass that.

CC Sabathia just isn’t good anymore. Period. It’s the same thing they went through last year with Derek Jeter and leaving him at second in the order when he clearly should’ve been hitting towards the bottom.

Yes, Warren does help the bullpen, but if your starters are getting shelled, who cares how good the back of your bullpen is? It won’t matter when its 6-0 in the second. The setup corps that Warren is supposed to help is doing pretty well on its own. You know how many earned runs Chasen Shreve and Justin Wilson gave up going into last night? As many runs as I did. Zero.

What happens when the Yankees trade for another starter? We all know they will. Will they move Nathan Eovaldi out of the rotation? Eovaldi doesn’t have an innings limit. Will they move Ivan Nova out because of his inning limit after Tommy John Surgery?

This is why Yankees fans should be nervous about Luis Severino and Bryan Mitchell. Severino has got it working in AAA and should be up at some point this season. But, if he dominates as a reliever, we are back to the Joba Rules. Will it be called the Severino Solution? How about the Mitchell Manifesto?

Yankees fans should be nervous when it comes to player development. At some point, the kids need to play and consistent time. Not re-tread veterans. Not guys who make a ton of money who aren’t worth it anymore.

Eminem said in Til I Collapse when it’s over just admit when it’s at its end.

The Yankees didn’t know how to do that with Jeter and they don’t know how to do that with Sabathia now. It cost them last year, and that same blind loyalty to players who aren’t what they were five years ago is going to get the Yankees in trouble again.
